We have the pleasure of inviting you to the 5th edition of our Festival Chapel for Europe, a series of 5 concerts by talented young artists and celebrated musicians right in the heart of the EU. On Wednesdays evenings 19:00, organized jointly with Pro Musica Pulchra.

Paul Heyman (06.09.1994) is a cellist from Belgium, performing mostly as a soloist and in chamber music.
Concert highlights are performances in prestigious venues and festivals like Bozar, Klarafestival, De Singel, De Bijloke, Beethoven Festival Bonn, Tivoli Vredenburg, Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden, Liszt Academy in Budapest, National Concert Hall in Dublin, Festival van Vlaanderen, B-Classic, Festival en Poitou, the spring concert at the Royal Palace in Brussels, La Seine Musicale in Paris, and many more.

In May 2022, in the midst of a very busy season with around 80 concerts, Paul was diagnosed with musician’s focal dystonia and had to give up performing for almost a year. Thanks to everyone who supported him and experts in the field, Paul was back on stage and able to play his first concerts again in April 2023.

In addition to his other activities, since 2023 Paul plays freelance as a cello solo in the Belgian National Orchestra.

Concerning studies, after having graduated with Raphael Wallfisch in Zürich with the highest distinction(100%),
 Paul went on to study with France Springuel in Belgium, and at the Philippe Jaroussky Academy in Paris. He also studied the baroque cello with Roel Dieltiens.

Paul has followed masterclasses with, ao. Gary Hoffman, Frans Helmerson, Alexander Rudin, Arto Noras, Pieter Wispelwey, Leonid Gorokhov, Vagram Saradjian, Natalia Gutman, and others.

In 2019 Paul was chosen as the laureate of the Belgian foundation ‘Swuk Vlaanderen’, an organization which supports young Flemish artists with the start of their professional careers. Thanks to the generous support of Swuk, Paul recorded his debut album in duo with pianist Isil Bengi, with Belgian romantic works for cello and piano, on the label Etcetera.

In 2021 Paul recorded his second album ‘Awakening’ with Trio Aries, with works by Scriabin, Suk, Schubert, and Mendelssohn, to great critical acclaim.

He is a prize winner of several national and international competitions, such as the Dexia Classics Music Competition, the Rotary Competition and Prix International Edmond Baert in Belgium, the Bartók World Competition in Budapest, the Semper International Music Competition in Italy, the Verao Classico music prize in Portugal, and the Supernova-competition organized by the Belgian national radio (Klara and Musiq’3).

Paul has appeared several times on Belgian radio and television, both performing and in interviews (Klara, Canvas, Musiq’3, La Trois), as well as on SWR, NDR (German Rundfunk), France Musique, RTE (Irish national Radio), Medici.tv and many more.

Paul Heyman plays on a cello made ca. 1740 by J.C. Hoffmann, who was the main provider of instruments to J.S. Bach in Leipzig.

Last year, we were unable to hold this festival due to a lack of financial support from the authorities. This year, the authorities will be making a modest contribution so, we need your participation and we count on your generosity after the concert.
