Come and discover the béguinages in Belgium – a few are well known, but many are virtually unknown.

For more than 10 years Graham Keen, a dual British and Belgian national, has been visiting the (25) béguinages in Flanders both as a visitor and a guide.

He will be showing his slides and talking about the history and particularly the spirit of these religious institutions, founded back in the 13th century.

Their fortunes had their ups and downs, often related to the war like history in this region, but also due to the changing attitudes of the Church towards these pious women, who were devoted Christians but stubbornly independent.

A la découverte des béguinages connus… ou mal connus en Belgique

Depuis plus de 10 ans Graham Keen, de nationalité britannique et belge, se rend dans les (25) béguinages en Flandre en tant que visiteur et guide.

Il vient nous présenter ses photos et nous raconter l’histoire et surtout l’esprit 

de ces institutions religieuses, fondées au 13e siècle.

Leur sort a subi des hauts et des bas, souvent liés à l’histoire belliqueuse dans nos régions mais aussi à l’attitude changeante de l’Eglise vis-à-vis de ces femmes pieuses, dévouées mais également très indépendantes.
